About the Author
Kathryn A. Bard is Professor of Archaeology at Boston University. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she has directed excavations in Egypt and northern Ethiopia since 1989, and in 1998 was given the Chairman’s Award of the National Geographic Society’s Committee for Research and Exploration. She is the author of From Farmers to Pharaohs: Mortuary Evidence for the Rise of Complex Society in Egypt (1994), the editor of The Archaeology of Ancient Egypt: An Encyclopedia (1999), and is on the editorial board of The Journal of Egyptian Archaeology published by the Egypt Exploration Society. Professor Bard is co-director of excavations at the pharaonic harbor at Mersa-Wadi Gawasis on the Red Sea, which has uncovered evidence of ancient Egyptian ships used in seafaring expeditions to the land of Punt, probably located in what is now eastern Sudan and Eritrea.

Great resource for "alternative processes"

I teach alternative processes and was looking for a smaller, and cheaper, version of Christopher James "The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes". While I love James' book, the cost has always made it a difficult choice to require my students to purchase, I would rather they had a bit more money for supplies to actually use some of the processes described in the book instead of just reading about them. This is where "Photographic Possibilities" comes to the rescue. Hirsch does a good job of summarizing photographic history as it relates to the use of processes in the first chapter of the book, and he keeps it interesting so even the shortest attention spans should be captivated. The rest of the book includes valuable information on classic B/W film and paper processes (face it, these are now alternative processes too), as well as discussing many of the more popular hand-coated processes like Cyanotype and Platinum/Palladium. The chapter on digital negatives is a good primer for a beginner to use, but like any textbook that includes current software and hardware, it is doomed to be out of date soon by no fault of Hirsch. The most valuable part of this textbook in my opinion is the chapter on how to actually incorporate the various processes and concepts into a work-flow that makes the best use of your materials and processes. I recommend this to any photographer wanting to expand their image making vocabulary, and instructors of alternative photography.

A Must-Have Book on Alternative Processes

Robert Hirsch's Photographic Possibilities, Third Edition, is absolutely fantastic and takes its place as the frontrunner among texts concerned with experimental photography. This new book is wonderfully updated with current information and most importantly; it's a visual and creative feast. The turn of each page is a delight for the eyes, as well as incredible inspiration for trying new techniques, exploring, playing, and taking chances with clear and precise guidance from an expert and venerable writer (See Hirsch's other books: Light and Lens: Photography in the Digital Age--the benchmark of excellence in the new hybrid world of traditional and digital imaging; Seizing the Light: A Social History of Photography- the standard of excellence in the history of photography; and Exploring Color Photography: From the Darkroom to the Digital Studio- the standout book in its field as well).

Photographic Possibilities is the most beautifully illustrated text on experimental photography available today, profusely filled with numerous wonderful images and examples of the many techniques presented in clear chapters; from elegant, antique 19th century contact printing methods like platinum and gum printing, to 21st century step-by-sep procedures using computers and inkjet printers for experimental purposes and creating enlarged negatives. The publisher obviously spent the significant funds required for reproducing every photograph in its required color and spot varnishing each image, producing a truly stunning book of beautiful pictures.

Beyond the inspiring illustrations, another strength of Photographic Possibilities is the quality of the writing. Hirsch has proven his skills in research over many years, regarding practically every facet of photography's technique, aesthetic, and history. This latest edition, vastly updated, is the compilation of all this knowledge, as well as extensive interviews with artists and experts around the world sharing their discoveries with a highly accomplished, respected fellow artist and author. No other text on this subject can match Photographic Possibilities for the clarity of its text, its concise writing, or the beauty of the reproductions.

In the spirit of disclosure, Robert Hirsch has kindly included some of my artwork in this book, but as a university professor who has taught alternative processes in colleges and workshops for over 30 years, I would rave about this innovative book anyway! Photographic Possibilities is the clearest, most inspiring, most concisely written, and most beautifully illustrated book in the field, and is a valuable resource for everyone. All photographers, ranging from enthusiasts to deadly serious fine art professionals will have enough information, and most importantly, enough inspiration to last a long lifetime- if you wear gloves.

Hirsch does a great job of covering the ins and outs of alternative photography. This book is a great resource for doing everything from acrylic lifts to palladium/platinum printing to high speed developing times.

Some believe that Jesus will return at any moment, rescuing his followers from Satan's wrath and God's judgments that are foretold by the ancient Jewish prophets and first-century followers of Jesus.  Others are convinced that believers and unbelievers alike will endure all the events that are described in the apostle John's Apocalypse.  Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in between.
But most simply do not thing about Christ's return at all.  The cares of life take center stage.
The God-Man: Rapture, Wrath and Reign is the second installment of a fast-paced, two-part fiction-thriller that portrays the lives of courageous believers who stand firm in their faith during a time of intense persecution.  Concerning this time, John called for "patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God's commandments and remain faithful to Jesus."  The heinous period is cut short by the rapture of the church, making way for the fearsome day of the Lord judgments that will ravage the earth.
Jesus said, "So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time." (Mark 13:23). Believers are to remain vigilant, resting in the certainty of Christ's return, and encouraged by a sovereign God who has revealed "everything ahead of time."

About the Author
Bruce Biller is the author of The god-man: seed of Satan, the popular thriller that charts the rise of the treacherous Antichrist and his revered false prophet. Biller is the co-founder of an information technology firm and lives in Southern California with his wife, Kay.

Awesome sequel!

Once again Bruce writes a riveting account of the day leading up to "The day of the Lord" and after. Through his eloquent storytelling, he makes the prophetic passages out of the Bible come to life. This sequel to "The god-man, seed of Satan" continues where the story left off taking the reader to the glorious return of our Savior. With the times we are living in, both books are a MUST READ.

Great novel!

This is a fast paced novel filled with plausible end-times scenarios. Often times there is a lot of 'fluff' in novels that I can hardly wait to wade through...not so in Bruce Billers writing...the novel progresses so fast, at times, I can 'feel' the urgency of his message. It is interesting enough to capture the imagination of any reader, a believer in God's Word, or not. I gave it four out of five stars, because there were several places where there was a build up, an anticipation of what would happen next, that ultimately let me down. I have enjoyed both of Bruce Biller's novels and would certainly purchase a third if there is one.

An exciting journey!!

Mr. Biller has done an outstanding job. He builds the very nature of characters both biblical and fictional. He has a gift of holding the readers attention as well as captivating their interest. I believe, Mr. Biller, has produced a very timely work. I believe it makes the reader think about the direction the world is heading as well as making one consider there own position.

this book is a great one stop shop

Nothing stuffy about this Nobel winner! If you ever wanted to know about how science can be creative, this book is a great one stop shop. The story is easy to follow because it is real, clearly not embellished. I finished it in a day of pleasure.

This book, Dancing Naked in the Mind Field, was so enthralling that I almost read it through literally in one sitting after randomly flipping it open and sitting down to finish the paragraph I first set my eyes on. I came to Amazon excited to give it a positive review and was surprised to find the high number of negative reviews. As far as I can tell, many of the negative reviewers don't understand the author or the point of this book.

Reviewers who describe Mullis as a sloppy, irresponsible scientist who just got lucky need to reflect on the fact that he was recruited by Cetus (the company he was working at when he developed PCR), which also saw fit to put him in charge of a research team. This was all before the Nobel prize; he was making traditional professional progress without celebrity.

One of the things that's clear from the book is that Mullis has a deep life-long concern with systemic power structures and the way they warp both our lives and scientific research. So, for example, critics of his views on HIV/AIDS fail to see that he took a position on the topic after one of his friends was ostracized from the professional community for having the "wrong" views in the early days when AIDS research was new and less settled. The same is true of the OJ Simpson trial, which excited Mullis less because he thought so highly of OJ than because he wanted a chance to take down the enormous and overwhelmingly powerful bureaucracy of the LA prosecutor's office. Likewise, astrology is less about whether the stars affect our personality than about the largely unscientific and ineffective field of mental health.

The other face of Mullis' anti-institutional views is a type of humanism, which leads him to say things that, frankly, make perfect sense to me. NASA spends huge amounts of money on the shuttle program and international space station. What the heck are we getting out of it? Why don't we focus first on figuring out how to protect ourselves from natural threats (like the decimation of life from an asteroid impact) before figuring out how to set up a Mars colony. A Mars colony might be exciting, but it's not very practical and isn't doing anything for the man on the street. At one point, he suggests we might just be better off with priests of medieval religion than with priests of modern science. This is similar to the criticisms Nassim Taleb has been making of our priests of Wall Street, and I think it makes sense.

The writing is fast-moving and humor-filled, although inconsistent. I don't know who came up with the clunky title, but most of the book is wittier. He discusses the fact that his wife Nancy encouraged him in writing this book and then edited it. Some parts about PCR are dumbed down versions of his Nobel Prize lecture, so I suspect his wife encouraged him to write something that would be accessible to the general public but still get across his message that we should turn off the TV, do good science, and enjoy the ride.

A Fleeting Glimpse of a True Scientist, American and Thinker

I love and hate this book at the same time. Kary Mullis is absolutely brilliant. His pragmatic thinking, scientific integrity, and bruising rationality are a rarity in a dumbed down world where pop science has replaced anything resembling the pure pursuit of scientific truth. And it is this fact that makes the book so good and yet so agonizing. Dr Mullis presents clear lines of logic on a number of common topics, that challenge everything you thought you knew, yet seem so undeniably right and logical. His ability to simply convey scientific concepts is rivaled only by his no holds barred descriptions of a life thoroughly lived and far from the conventional. To the extent that it excites, entertains, and teaches you, it will simultaneously disappoint you with truths and honest assessments of the world that Mullis makes no attempt to sugar coat. While you, like me, may love this book, at some point you will hate Mullis for being both so honest and so right. Nonetheless, such a fresh perspective in an otherwise pulp, pop and carbon copy world, provides an entertainment experience that would make even the best novelist envious. Mullis gives us a peek into the Taboo, reflections on topics, you've probably never thought much about, and compelling arguments against things you swore were fact. The fact that so much of it is true only adds to the intrigue. Whether you are a scientist, or everyman, thinker or casual observer, this book has something to entertain, enlighten and challenge you. A must read. This book is just fantastic.
