Good Reference for Students

Learning neuroanatomy is like being in a huge maze. Mention it to any medical student who has just had their first encounter with it, and the most likely response you'll get is a heavy sigh. More often that not, medical students faced with the task of understanding neuroanatomy will lose their way and become disheartened as they go along. The subject is vast and complex. Some may end up never quite finding their way out of this maze for their entire medical lives.
Snell's Neuroanatomy is quite comprehensive - it covers a wide range of topics from the neurobiology of neurons to neurodevelopment. At the same time, it is quite understandable. The language used is clear and concise with appropriate diagrams and tables. There is an emphasis on clinical correlations in this book as evidenced by the clinical notes in each chapter, which highlight the clinical significance of the information that has been presented in the chapter. Anatomy with little significance have either been omitted or given only brief descriptions in the book.
Clinical correlation is important, for all too often, students don't realise the practical purpose of what they are learning. Visual aids in the book include images of neuroanatomy in practice as well; quite a number of CT and MRI scans are included. There are also lots of illustrations, pathological sections and photographs. At the end of each chapter, USMLE type questions are provided. On the extremely rare occasion when the thirst for learning neuroanatomy is not satisfied, references to authoritative books and papers are given (yikes!). The whole format and overall presentation of book are similar in style to Professor Snell's more well-known clinical anatomy book.
This book will not give an instantaneous understanding of neuroanatomy but with enough effort and thought, the book does deliver. It shortens and guides one through the potentially confusing and long journey of learning neuroanatomy. All in all, this book covers enough neuroanatomy in sufficient detail to be a good reference text for students and at the same time is quite accessible (considering the subject it deals with) and would function quite well as a primary textbook also.

Check out the 5th Ed, 4th Ed was terrible

I'm in the middle of MS-II neuro and the 5th Ed, NOT the 4th, compares favorably with the popular Blumenfled text. I like Snell better because the images are a little simpler and it is more condensed. Clinical correlations at the end of each chapter are good and the questions are great. See what you think at the library first. Enjoi

Back in the early 1970s, "Janson"--as History of Art is universally known--was a hefty but manageable 616 pages, illustrated mostly with black-and-white photographs. It also famously contained not a single work by a female artist and devoted a scant eight pages to non-Western art. Five editions and three decades later, the art history student's Stone Age-to-20th-century Bible has swelled into a massive, slipcased, 1,000-page tome studded with 865 color reproductions and subheadings that corral individual artists whose achievements used to flow together like some mighty art historical river.

Women artists (from 17th-century painter Artemisia Gentileschi to contemporary photographer Cindy Sherman) now make the cut, and the focus is purely Western, extended to include 20th-century photography and postmodernism (with a scant two pages on postmodern theory). The timeline charting landmarks in art alongside key events in history, science, and the arts has been handsomely redesigned. Each historical period now has its own world map and selection of excerpts from primary sources (including unusual ones, like a fellow monk's account of painter Hugo van der Goes's mental troubles).

With each edition, portions of the text have been altered to reflect shifting scholarly interpretations. (As the late H.W. Janson wryly noted in the original, 1962 preface, "There are no 'plain facts' in the history of art.") H.W.'s son Anthony writes in his preface to the sixth edition that changes have been made to sections on ancient art; French romantic, realist, and impressionist painting; and the history of Western architecture. Happily unchanged--no dumbing-down here--is the clarity and intelligence of the writing. All in all, History of Art remains an invaluable reference for anyone who studies or writes about the subject. Horst W. Janson died in 1982, not long after the second edition of his best-selling History of Art was published. His son Anthony (art history, Univ. of North Carolina, Wilmington) inherited the franchise and has contributed to four subsequent updates, this one appearing four years after the last revision. Familiar to art history students throughout the world, this massive survey of 30,000 years of Western art is generally regarded as the fundamental text for teaching the subject to undergraduates. It is a deserving reputation, for in addition to the ecumenical enthusiasm and economy of description infusing the Jansons' writing, the work features time lines densely packed with data, four sections of over 100 primary sources, well-chosen illustrations, and an updated bibliography including web references. Its graphic design is rich with imagery and progresses without any affectations. New to this edition are rewritten sections covering architecture, ancient art, and French painting, as well as a discography of related recordings. The Jansons' comprehensive history of Western art is practically an institution. First published in 1962, it has grown and changed over the decades in response to the creation of new artworks as well as to new archaeological finds, long overlooked details such as Michelangelo's tortured self-portrait in The Last Judgment, and fresh interpretations and ongoing controversies, the lifeblood of art history, which is always a work in progress. Janson senior died in 1982, but his son has carried on, now presenting an energetically renovated and expanded edition. Distinguished by the clarity and liveliness of its prose and the sharpness and rich color of its reproductions, this volume offers fluent analysis of both the formal aspects of the art it highlights and the historical context within which it was created. And the Jansons don't skimp on coverage of twentieth-century art and architecture, as other survey writers do. Instead they document its frenetic diversity and risk-taking with a profound sense of what connects the work of Susan Rothenberg, for instance, with the magical cave paintings of Lascaux. Best art history reference for most people..

This is a wonderful book and, in my humble opinion, a better book for most users than the big textbook edition "History of Art". The only complaint I have about this edition is its name; I feel it should be titled "History of Art: Concise Edition" as "History of Art for Young People" makes it sound too much like a children's book. While certainly suitable for an intelligent child, it is a superb art overview and reference for all people.
If you desire a general art reference you won't go wrong with this gem and you'll not find anything better. I have the 3rd edition also and it is excellent but this 6th one is greatly expanded (e.g., lots more photos and color) while retaining the user-friendly nature of the earlier editions. The text is clear and interesting, not written in the dry, boring style of a textbook. The printing and reproductions are top-quality. This art book is truly itself a masterpiece!

Originally got this book for a class my wife was taking. she dropped out of the class but we kept the book because it is so wonderful. Lots of great pictures and extensive information. Nicely bound and the slipcase is a bonus. A favorite on our coffee table and a great addition to our collection. Proved very valuable later when I took an art history class. We used a different book but I found myself going back to this one for its great pictures and presentation of the art.

Disappointing

I guess I was one of the minority of people who were just disappointed by this book.

I adored the Boss. I absolutely adored the Girlfriend. The Bride was a bit of a disappointment, but the Ex was a lot, lot more disappointing.

I think just too many things were thrown at the reader, and just received superficial treatment. In one book, we had Neil's mother dying, Neil's alcoholism, Emma's new baby, Neil's ex, a relationship with Valerie, a foursome, Sophie's mother coming to stay, Sophie's eating issues and (insert eye-roll) Sophie's new-found bisexuality. Which meant that every one of these topics, which was worthy of actual exploration, really only received a paragraph or two before the author moved on to the next big thing.

As much as I love Neil and Sophie, I want to remember them with the Boss and the Girlfriend. I think I'm done with this series.

The books in this series keep getting better

Sometimes a series will start to peter out and I'll wish the author would just let the characters go off into the sunset and live happily ever after. This is NOT the case with Abigail Barnette's sexy series. The characters remain compelling and the storyline keeps me interested. I want more. After I finished this one, I went back and re-read portions of The Boss just to remember certain details. This series is very well written and HOT. I will continue to buy any installments the author publishes.

I can name a couple of series where I was once obsessed and feel the author is just churning them out now for money. Last week, I read the 4th book in the Crossfire series (Captivated By You) and just thought it was "bleh". Diana Gabaldon's last two books in the Outlander series have just sucked, in my opinion. I know some readers will give rave reviews to just about anything, but I'm careful about encouraging readers with limited time and resources to take the plunge and invest in a book that I can't wholeheartedly recommend. This 4th book in the series is truly terrific.
