3.5 Unique, Corrupt, Non-Stop, Action Packed Stars!

Disconnect had a lot of concepts, characters, action, and events, that came together to create a very complex and unique story. If you are an aficionado of science-fiction, you will enjoy reading Disconnect. This story was the opposite of "chick-lit," and I think that it would be enjoyed more by reader's of "man-lit," if that makes sense. I decided to read Disconnect to try something new from what I typically read, and get out of my comfort zone. I was glad that I tried something new! Overall, I would say that it was a non-stop, action-packed, fast-paced, thrill ride of a good story!

There were many aspects that I enjoyed while reading Disconnect. My favorite, was the whole Dystopian concept. There was a corrupt government of power hungry politicians that were willing to kill the poor, and powerless, to expand there land. They looked down at these individuals as worthless trash. Then I got to see the main character Zachary rise up, and try to survive the mass murder of his people. I enjoy Dystopian stories so much that I was hooked on the storyline!

Also, there was great world-building in the story. It takes place in space. There is "Underworld," where the poverty stricken, powerless, and hopeless live. There is a lot of violence in "Underworld," and the whole "survival of the fittest mentality." Then, there is "Overworld," were the powerful and wealthy live. They have the privileges of a clean environment with fresh air, water, clothing, and plentiful food. Mr. Siddiq did an amazing job of describing "Underworld, " and "Overworld." I could visualize both places and the characters in detail.

There was always something going on in the story, with a lot of twists and turns in the plot, and a lot of surprises. The main character, Zachary, was well developed. I got a well-rounded perspective of him.

I would have liked to have seen a more well-rounded, and developed relationship between Rose and Zachary. They had such strong feelings for one another, but didn't see each other that much, and their conversations were limited. Also, the story had so much going on, and was so detail-oriented that sometimes I found myself lost, and confused with the storyline. I think at times, the story needed to be a bit more simplified. It was a little difficult to keep up with all the characters, and events taking place.

Overall, Disconnect was an enjoyable read. Mr. Siddiq wrote a very unique and imaginative story. If you are a reader that loves Science-Fiction, I recommend that you read Disconnect.

I give Disconnect by Imran Siddiq, 3.5 unique, corrupt, non-stop, action-packed Stars! If you enjoy a mix of Science Fiction, and Dystopian, with a little Romance, Disconnect would be a great choice for your next read! I recommend Disconnect to reading audience's that enjoy stories that take place in space, enjoy robotics, and imagining what modern technology might look like in the future. I think that Disconnect will be a favorite of readers who enjoy a lot of action, and reading about corrupt governments, the fight for power and civil rights, but in a unique futuristic-setting and time period!

An action-packed and complex YA sci-fi tale

Set almost 300 years in the future, this complex YA sci-fi tale is full of adventure from start to finish. Society is divided into the Overworld and a far-less-desirable Underworld. Planets and moons are colonized, there is political unrest as overcrowding occurs and the government fights for space and resources. But amongst the war, protests, and a new breed of androids is a 16 year old boy, Zachary.

Zach, an Underworlder, experiences his first crush - a forbidden love of an Overworlderer. But don't expect pages of romance. The world Imran Siddiq has created is so bleak, there is no room for anything other than chaos. Zach is forced to grow up in the course of a day of fighting, and proves that bravery is not about having no fear, but about charging forward in the face of that fear. He is a hero, and one that readers are sure to follow into the next book of this new series.

Beautiful and Rich

Who can say they have created something worthy of a double read? I read this twice. The first time (because I read a LOT) I power skimmed it but there became so many instances where I stopped and re-read entire chapters that I finally stopped and began again.

Love, fear, prejudice, power, need, so much so fast and not enough book!

My favorite thing about the author's writing style is that its clean and concise. Too many authors use too many words trying to sound like J.R. Tolkien or someone similar but this author writes in perfect clarity. Details are crisp and feelings are instantly gratified because you don't ever have to wonder about what's happening, what's being seen/said/done...I don't know how to explain it. Just clear, wonderful writing and a story that I've been wishing for ever since I watched Mad Max for the first time last year (I know I missed out my WHOLE life and didn't even know it).

The wasteland and the relationship between those underground and above is crystal clear. Prejudice and fear will always exist, but so will love.

Love in space. I consider this a VERY worthwhile read and its better as a hardcopy for some reason. This is one of those books you want in your hands. I even found myself highlighting passages for myself.

Read the free sample for an idea of the authors crisp writing style and once you get into the character development and the relationships you will be glad you had the chance to read what I consider an Indie Treasure.

About the Author

John D. Daniels, the Samuel N. Friedland Chair of Executive Management at the University of Miami, received his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. His dissertation won first place in the award com­petition of the Academy of International Business. Since then he has been an active researcher. His articles have appeared in such leading journals as Academy of Management Journal, California Management Review, Columbia Journal of World Business, Journal of Business Research, Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Management Journal, and Weltwirtschaftliches Archiv. On its thirtieth anniversary, Management International Review referred to him as "one of the most prolific American IB scholars." He has also served as president of the Academy of International Business and dean of its Fellows. He also served as chairperson of the international division of the Academy of Management. He has worked and lived a year or longer in seven different countries, worked shorter stints in about thirty other countries on six conti­nents, and has traveled in many more. His foreign work has been a combination of private sector, govern­mental, teaching, and research assignments. He was formerly director of the Center for International Business Education and Research (C1BER) at Indiana University and holder of the E. Claiborne Robins Distinguished Chair at the University of Richmond.

 

Lee H. Radebaugh, is the KPMG Professor and Associate Director of the MBA Program at Brigham Young University. He received his MBA and doctorate from Indiana University. He taught at the Pennsylvania State University from 1972 to 1980. He also has been a visiting professor at Escuela de Administracion de Negocios para Graduados (ESAN), a graduate business school in Lima, Peru. In 1985, Professor Radebaugh was the James Cusator Wards visiting professor at Glasgow University, Scotland. His other books include International Accounting and Multinational Enterprises (John Wiley and Sons, 4th Edition) with S.J. Gray; Introduction to Business: International Dimensions (South-Western Publishing Company) with John D. Daniels; and seven books on Canada-U.S. trade and investment relations, with Earl Fry as co-editor. He has also published several other monographs and articles on international business and international account­ing in journals such as the Journal of Accounting Research, the Journal of International Financial Management and Accounting, the Journal of International Business Studies, and the International Journal of Accounting. He is currently serving as Editor of the Journal of International Accounting Research. His primary teaching interests are international business and international accounting. He is an active member of the American Accounting Association, the European Accounting Association, and the Academy of International Business, having served on several committees as the president of the International Section of the AAA and as the secretary-treasurer of the AIB. He is a member of the Fellows of the Academy of International Business. He is also active with the local business community as past president of the World Trade Association of Utah and member of the District Export Council. In 1998, he was named International Person of the Year in the State of Utah and Outstanding International Educator of the International Section of the American Accounting Association.

 

Daniel P. Sullivan, an Associate Professor of Management at the Alfred Lerner College of Business of the University of Delaware, received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. He researches a range of topics, including Globalization and Business, International Management, Global Strategy, Competitive Analysis, and Corporate Governance. His work on these topics has been published in leading scholarly journals, including the Journal of International Business Studies, Management International Review, Law and Society Review, and Academy of Management Journal. In addition, he has served on the editorial boards of Journal of International Business Studies and Management International Review. He has been honored for both his research and teaching, receiv­ing grants and winning awards for both activities while at the University of Delaware and, his for­mer affiliation, the A.B. Freeman School of Business of Tulane University. He has been awarded numerous teaching honors at the undergraduate, MBA, and EMBA levels–most notably, he was voted the Outstanding Teacher by the students of seven consecutive Executive MBA classes at the University of Delaware and Tulane University. He has taught, designed, and administered a range of graduate, undergraduate, and non-degree courses on topics spanning Globalization and Business, International Business Operations, International Management, Strategic Perspectives, Executive Leadership, and Corporate Strategy. In the United States, he has delivered lectures and courses at several uni­versity sites and company facilities. In addition, he has led courses in several foreign countries, including China, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Finally, he has worked with many managers and consulted with several multinational enterprises on issues of international business.

Best International Business Textbook

I use this textbook and its previous edition to teach International Business to senior level students in cyberspace. I consider this the most readable text on the subject. This edition has been slimmed down from the previous edition, and it is an improvement to an excellent text. My students agree that this text is great.
Anyone who needs a comprehensive book on this field should purchase this text, it is worth every penny!

A very good textbook overall, but one with a few flaws too.

Overall, this textbook has a lot of merit and is chock-full of very useful information, and many cited sources. However, it does have its flaws too. I will begin with the positive points as I also describe the textbook's overall features. I will then touch on the two main negative points, and close by explaining the context of my review.

PROS:

On the positive side, the chapters all begin and end with excellent case studies. The range of subjects covered throughout the textbook is excellent because it introduces just about every topic you would need to know when engaging in international business (especially from an operations standpoint). The two case studies used within each of these chapters increases the value of each chapter, significantly. It is always fascinating to read about the real-world challenges and opportunities within the global business environment if you are a person interested in this field.

Additionally, each chapter contains a "Point/Counterpoint" section that takes opposite views of some of the controversial topics being covered, which permits the reader to view the issues from the extremes. Of course, the truth about controversial subjects is often found somewhere in the middle. Nevertheless, by providing the extreme viewpoints you are better equipped to find the middle ground on such issues.

Another interesting feature of this textbook is the "Concept Check" features in the sidebars. This provides a cross-referencing of concepts being explained in one place with related or original explanations in other chapters. This is especially helpful if your class happens to skip a chapter here and there (which mine did) because you are provided a short explanation of these ideas. You are also notified which chapters in which you can find additional information on those subjects (without having to search for it).

CONS:

On the negative side, the biggest shortcoming of this textbook is its typographical errors. Words are sometimes missing from sentences, or sometimes conflicting words are present. Occasionally, homophones do occur, as well. Being a published author myself, I am quite sure that all of these issues arose from having multiple authors and multiple edits of the text. Nevertheless, it is quite cumbersome to have to re-read a sentence in order to mentally "edit" it enough to understand their point. So the authors or publisher would do well to run this through another round of careful professional editing.

I would have also preferred a stronger bias toward the Austrian School of Economics within the economics chapter (which was mentioned in one sentence only) and overall tone of the textbook since that is the ONLY school of economic thought that both predicted the current global crisis and explained its true causes. Nevertheless, the overall Neo-Classical approach of the textbook is sufficiently "free market" oriented to make the textbook useful, and they do give the reader a fairly useful description of the various economic system types in the economics chapter.

REVIEW CONTEXT:

I already have obtained my Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) certification from NASBITE through my existing collegiate credits and autodidactic research. However, I am now am working on my degree in this field in order to further my knowledge and academic credentials in international business.

Consequently, I had to purchase this textbook for a senior-level undergraduate course in International Business Operations. The authors of the textbook mention that it is also used in some MBA programs, and given the scope and depth of the subject matter I can certainly see why that would be the case.

Lastly, I recommend the Kindle edition for cost savings, speed of delivery, and simplicity for quotation when writing. (This latter benefit is especially important if you are buying this textbook for a university course as it will save you a lot of time when writing your assignments.)

About the Author
Bradley R. Schiller has over four decades of experience teaching introductory economics at American University, the University of California (Berkeley and Santa Cruz), the University of Maryland, and the University of Nevada (Reno). He has given guest lectures at more than 300 colleges ranging from Fresno, California, to Istanbul, Turkey. Dr. Schiller’s unique contribution to teaching is his ability to relate basic principles to current socioeconomic problems, institutions, and public policy decisions. This perspective is evident throughout Essentials of Economics. Dr. Schiller derives this policy focus from his extensive experience as a Washington consultant. He has been a consultant to most major federal agencies, many congressional committees, and political candidates. In addition, he has evaluated scores of government programs and helped design others. His studies of income inequality, poverty, discrimination, training programs, tax reform, pensions, welfare, Social Security, and lifetime wage patterns have appeared in both professional journals and popular media. Dr. Schiller is also a frequent commentator on economic policy for television, radio, and newspapers. Dr. Schiller received his PhD from Harvard and his BA degree, with great distinction, from the University of California (Berkeley). When not teaching, writing, or consulting, Professor Schiller is typically on a tennis court, schussing down a ski slope, or enjoying the crystal blue waters of Lake Tahoe.

Karen Gebhardt is a faculty member in the Department of Economics at Colorado State University (CSU). Dr. Gebhardt has a passion for teaching economics. She regularly instructs large introductory courses in macro and microeconomics, small honors sections of these core principles courses, and upper division courses in Public Finance, Microeconomics, and International Trade, as well as a graduate course in teaching methods. She is an early adopter of technology in the classroom and advocates strongly for it because she sees the difference it makes in student engagement and learning. Dr. Gebhardt has taught online consistently since 2005 and coordinates the online program within the Department of Economics at CSU. She also supervises and mentors the department’s graduate teaching assistants and adjunct instructors. Dr. Gebhardt was the recipient of the Water Pik Excellence in Education Award in 2006 and was awarded the CSU Best Teacher Award in 2015. Dr. Gebhardt’s research interests, publications, and presentations involve the economics of human–wildlife interaction, economics education, and the economics of gender in the United States economy. Before joining CSU, she worked as an Economist at the United States Department of Agriculture/Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service/Wildlife Services/National Wildlife Research Center conducting research on the interactions of humans and wildlife, such as the economic effects of vampire bat-transmitted rabies in Mexico; the potential economic damage from the introduction of invasive species to the Islands of Hawaii; bioeconomic modeling of the impacts of wildlife-transmitted disease; and others. In her free time, Dr. Gebhardt enjoys learning about new teaching methods that integrate technology, as well as rock climbing and camping in the Colorado Rockies and beyond.

Complete for an elementary treatment.

Elementary but relatively complete, this book treats theory beyond that mentioned in other books such as those by Jeans, Loeb, and Present. Kauzmann's treatment of real gases is particularly useful because there are no perfect gases. He refers to a volume II in this book, which I would also like to acquire, but if it was ever published I don't know when or under what title. Perhaps a kind reader could inform me of this information.

Useful, practical, educational, and entertaining!

What an amazing story. I have been following the author on-line for a number of years and couldn’t understand how he was able to play all these courses. I don’t have the resources to play a fraction of the one’s he did, but the book is a great guide to help me play just a few. I especially liked his stories of playing in Japan and France and found them entertaining. Wish the book was longer, but already have a couple of ideas on how to play a couple of bucket list courses. Pictures are amazing too.

What an epic journey

Worth the price of the book for the Augusta story alone. This guy is incredibly lucky, not only does he have a fairy-tale story but he knows how to pull the reader along without it being about his own game. The stories he weaves in about other crazy golfers are just as good. Great tips on etiquette and a warped sense of humor. How do I become him?

"Mannerism, the sophisticated and sometimes perverse interpretation of Renaissance style, determined the taste of customers and fashion in the goldsmiths' workshops for nearly a hundred years from about 1540. During this time something more than the competent exercise of his craft was expected of the goldsmith; the more complex the design and original the invention, the more admiration it attracted. As a result, profuse and fantastic embellishments were imposed upon familiar utensils of everyday life. The artists who contributed their ideas and invention to the new versions of classical models, upon which most sixteenth-century forms were based, were not necessarily working goldsmiths; they included masters of the arts of painting, sculpture and engraving. The designs which emerged made few concessions to function, for their creators intended to offer their clients essays in virtuosity."

This scholarly study examines the art of the Mannerist goldsmith in Europe in a degree of detail not hitherto attempted in any language. The fifteen chapters discuss the following aspects of the subject:
source material; the nature of patronage, the accumulation of treasure bv Renaissance princes, guild regulations; methods of production and sources of design; the influence of the Classical Renaissance on style in goldsmiths work; the effect of this taste in the countries of Western Europe; the nature of Mannerism and the consequences of the decay of the Renaissance aesthetic ideal; Mannerist goldsmiths' and their work in Western and Central Europe examined country by country; the work of the goldsmith in base metal, with particular reference to arms and armour."

About the Author

Colleen Belk and Virginia Borden Maier collaborated on teaching biology to nonmajors for over a decade together at the University of Minnesota—Duluth. This collaboration has continued through Virginia’s move to St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York, and has been enhanced by their differing but complementary areas of expertise. In addition to the non-majors course, Colleen Belk teaches general biology for majors, genetics, cell biology, and molecular biology courses. Virginia Borden Maier teaches general biology for majors, evolutionary biology, zoology, plant biology, ecology, and conservation biology courses.

 

After several somewhat painful attempts at teaching the breadth of biology to non-majors in a single semester, the two authors came to the conclusion that they needed to find a better way. They realized that their students were more engaged when they understood how biology directly affected their lives. Colleen and Virginia began to structure their lectures around stories they knew would interest students. When they began letting the story drive the science, they immediately noticed a difference in student interest, energy, and willingness to work harder at learning biology. Not only has this approach increased student understanding, but it has also increased the authors’ enjoyment in teaching the course–presenting students with fascinating stories infused with biological concepts is simply a lot more fun. This approach served to invigorate their teaching. Knowing that their students are learning the biology that they will need now and in the future gives the authors a deep and abiding satisfaction.
