My company provided us with this book in a recent training. Most of the trainings are boring and something memorable for only a short time. This book is not that. The simple metaphor used in the introduction, and the entire basis of the book is very meaningful and easy to see in action. Today I hear so many people complain and feel that they are entitled to things instead of taking responsibility for their actions. This book shows that the smallest increment of effort can have positive effects not only on your professional life, but all aspects. This book uses real life examples that are easily relatable and prove the point. This is a quick read, but definitely worth the price and definitely applicable to life. I highly recommend this book.

In order to purify food from the poisons coming from the earth on the one side and from the animals on the other side, it should be cleared. No physical or psychological method is able to purify the food except the thoughts and feelings of the people. Meat food contains most poisons. Neurasthenia partly is due to this. A day will come when even the plants in their intent to keep their lives will start producing poisons harmful to man. People use them for cure.

The Europeans are always in a hurry and when eating they do not chew their food well and do not think about the food while eating, but think about other things. While eating bread you should think about the bread only it is sacred. Wheat is sacred. You eat unconsciously and then you say that you suffer from various diseases. In order to show higher spiritual abilities man should poses finer matter and this happens with nutrition, but it is necessary to know how to extract the important extract from the food. An interesting selection

Despite the terrible translation and grammar, this book holds its value. Why? Because the editors have sifted through hundreds of lectures to compile a book about the secret virtues of food. This book also talks about fasting. I am still reading it but here is what I remember and would like to investigate:
- a 24 hour fast without food or water can rejuvenate the body, as long as there are things like air, sunshine, good thoughts, etc.
- apricots renew everything
- cherries make people cheerful
- fasting is one key to looking younger

Douno's style and content seem to be a cross between Gurdjieff and Yogananda. If bad translations, poor editing, poor curation and an unpolished book scare you, avoid this book. I got this on Kindle. I wouldn't buy it on paperback.

A true blast from the past, for a generation that has grown up and, yes, even old. Many of us I'm sure still cling to some of the values of back then, but I doubt that most of us would still be willing to "Fight in earnest and altogether." Still good reading after all these years.

Oh, the times, they were a-changing

In the early 1970s, as I struggled through my adolescence, James Simon Kunen's "The Strawberry Statement" was one of my favorite books. Part diary, part reflection and part polemic, it allowed me to participate vicariously in the confusion, rage and activism of Columbia's student strikes of the late 1960s.

Kunen was the kind of kid I wanted to be. A nerdy kind of a guy, he participated in anti-establishment student actions at Columbia University. He protested construction projects that supposedly disenfranchised Columbia's neighbors and helped occupy the offices of college officials. He was an activist, though on the fringes, "stickin' it to the man" before the phrase became widely known. Kunen was the poster child for my teen rage against a governmental machine that had my parents' blind support. His writing is genuine and funny, capturing the hydra-headed angst of being a long-haired college kid in 1968. No wonder I liked the book!

Kunen's description of student organizers like Mark Rudd nailed (albeit unconsciously) the leaders of the period as typical politicians, who carefully managed the mob's righteous indignation with their own positioning for future leadership roles. Kunen's description of university officials poignantly captured their vapidity and their befuddlement at being questioned by their under-age charges. The book is a perfectly-posed snapshot of a culture teetering between a passive age of obedient complacency and an emerging age of anti-authoritarian mistrust and challenge.

Thirty years later, I also see some of the narcissistic silliness that defined the 1960s. The war in Vietnam, which presumably fueled protests, is strangely absent from Kunen's writings, giving his musings a tinge of empty-headedness rather than profundity. Marxism, which appealed to a generation of college radicals, seems worn more as a badge of distinctiveness from his parent's unreflective capitalism rather than a lived reality. For all his desire to be different, Kunen is depressingly the same as many post-adolescents, crossing swords with adults who don't take him seriously, missing the big picture while fighting the good fight.

As a way for adolescents to get in touch with their desire for activism, "The Strawberry Statement" is a gem. As a snapshot of being 19 years old in late 1960s - with its half-blind groping toward an unseen and hopefully brighter future-it is priceless.

Important memoir from Columbia radical about '68 riot

I first read this book back in the late '70's, when I was in college myself. I strongly sympathized with a lot of the things the author was saying, which seemed just as true then in terms of broad philosophical concerns.
The book is really kind of picaresque, though, and is mostly about the author's days wandering around the Columbia campus during the 'student unrest' of spring 1968. It seems to me now to be an accurate picture of the state of mind (and ego!) an adolescent caught up in the excitement of a hopeful ferment. 20 years later the radicalism looks pretty absurd, and the naivite of a handful of ivory-tower revolutionaries believing that they would somehow remake the country in the face of popular disapproval (Oh yes!) and a complete lack of long range plans and goals, is laughable. Still, there is a lot of crie du couer here, mixed together with teenage truculence.
Kunen was 19 when he wrote the book which would make him 50 now. He was recently a reporter for TIME magazine, and wrote a '97 article that can be looked up at the TIME website about the children of the radicals. He also wrote a follow-up to The Strawberry Statement which I THINK was a TIME article, in '88 I think.

About the Author

William Croft is Professor of Linguistics at Manchester University and has held positions at the universities of Michigan, Stanford, and at the Max Planck Institute in Nijmegen. His books are 'Typology and Universals' (CUP 1990) and 'Syntactic Categories and Grammatical Relations: The Cognitive Organization of Information' (University of Chicago Press 1991). typologically useful anarchism

i never thought i'd say this about a syntax book (hehe!) but this work promotes freedom of thought and is a great read. i understand that the seeming lack of rules might confuse or frustrate a formally grounded linguist, in the same way that my current laziness in not hitting shift to capitalize is probably driving some wingnut out there mad, but the book is perfect if you don't have a need to sweepingly generalize everything (Croft intentionally is anti- universalist within this book because it's designed for typologists, who have had to deal with reductionism for a long time and are probably really happy that someone is finally validating the holes they found in universal generalizations while they were analyzing languages other than english ). my grad colleagues and i love it, so ha.

Awesome content, HORRIBLE production quality

This is a fascinating book on the "radical" take on Construction Grammar that Croft has developed. Unfortunately, the quality of the print-on-demand version of this book that I received from Amazon was simply appalling. The cover is low-quality paper, blurry with smeared and dulled colors. The printing inside has such bad resolution that it reminds me of old dot-matrix printers. Boo, Oxford, and shame on you for dropping all quality.

Interesting read for the conscious traveler

I was assigned this book for a class and I admit I had put off reading it. However, I did start to read it when I went on my latest vacation to Central America. When I started reading the book, I was a little turned off because I thought it was filled with a lot of common sense. However, as I continued to read and continued to travel, the book really started to resonate with me. It's a great read for someone traveling somewhere a bit off the beaten path or a bit outside of your comfort zone, and reminds you to be observant throughout your travels and really appreciate traveling to new places and meeting new people.

About the Author
Kathryn A. Bard is Professor of Archaeology at Boston University. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she has directed excavations in Egypt and northern Ethiopia since 1989, and in 1998 was given the Chairman’s Award of the National Geographic Society’s Committee for Research and Exploration. She is the author of From Farmers to Pharaohs: Mortuary Evidence for the Rise of Complex Society in Egypt (1994), the editor of The Archaeology of Ancient Egypt: An Encyclopedia (1999), and is on the editorial board of The Journal of Egyptian Archaeology published by the Egypt Exploration Society. Professor Bard is co-director of excavations at the pharaonic harbor at Mersa-Wadi Gawasis on the Red Sea, which has uncovered evidence of ancient Egyptian ships used in seafaring expeditions to the land of Punt, probably located in what is now eastern Sudan and Eritrea.

The relationship between war and media is complex and problematic. It is almost impossible to be impartial to this bloody phenomenon. Today the relationship is characterized by the emergence of diffused war. The book combines theory with specific case studies that are taken from recent wars. This book offers an invaluable review of the key literature, tracing new developments and directions. It is a welcome addition to the studies of war and media and can serve as a basic textbook for many modules in the fields of media, cultural studies, politics, sociology and security studies.
