Architecture of the Panama Canal Zone: Civic and Residential Structures & Townsites, by Edith Crouch

The civic and residential architectural structures, spanning the early decades of the 1900s through the 1960s, that defined America's presence in the Panama Canal Zone are examined. Through over 1000 images and detailed text, explore the major civic architectural achievements, including the Beaux Arts styles Administration Building and Prado, Gorgas Hospital, Balboa School, YMCA, Union Church, and the Panama Railway Station. Residential architecture is also looked at, including the re-purposing of the French structures that remained from France's efforts to construct a sea level canal, and the permanent concrete block, mid-century houses built for employees and their families. An array of renowned American architects and architectural practices created these civic and residential structures, including James Renwick, Jr., Austin W. Lord, Bertram Goodhue, Delano & Aldrich, Edward Durell Stone, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. This book is a great resource for architecture and history lovers.

Unbelievable historical reference of the American Outpost at the Panama Canal - hard to put down!!!!
By panamaline
This is a fantastic book both as a reference on the architecture of the US run Panama Canal Zone and as a true reminder of what those of us lucky enough to grow up there experienced. The depth and breadth of the text is amazing. There is not one town that is overlooked with maps of each one and many great pictures. The supporting text tells a story that few Americans are aware of and one that we should not lose.

One important note that those who read this book will become aware of is that the majority of the Americans in the Canal Zone were not military or military dependents, they were civilian employees of the the Panama Canal Company and their families. There were of course military families but they came and went every few years while many if not most of the actual employees of the Canal spent most of their careers working on the isthmus and in numerous cases families spent generations in the employ of the Canal.

For almost 100 years American civilians worked, lived, were born, went to school and died on the Isthmus of Panama both building and supporting the operation of the Panama Canal. This wonderful book explains in great detail how and where they lived. It is a story not to be missed or lost.

Hats off to the author for taking the time to do obviously exhaustive research and then translate it into an easy to read and well illustrated documentary.

Family Treasure
By CHIEF
For someone like me that lived in the Canal Zone from 1935 for twenty five total years in "Quarters" from a "paint shack" in the middle of a quadrangle in Fort Clayton, a 24 family house behind the YMCA in Balboa , then four family, two family, and finally in one of the great two story NCO quarters in Albrook AFB ---and all the other great stories and pictures of the Canal - old and new...... I found a most unusual treasure book. A "family heritage" accounting of my life in the Canal Zone.
