The first guide I grab when a question arises

I have a shelf full of style and usage guides (I'm a writer and translator by profession), and this is the first one I reach for when I have a question. The explanations are clear, reasonable, and cover both UK and US usage. The author strikes a fine balance between prescriptive and descriptive standards, and in some cases explains the arguments in favor of competing norms. I recommend this book highly.
