It is a sobering discovery, and a perplexing one, for nobody in the development where she was found steps forward to claim the little girl. Obsessed more deeply by this case than he imagined possible, Decker is determined to follow the scant clues to an answer. But his trail is leading him to a killing ground where four bodies lie still and lifeless. And by the time Rina returns, Peter Decker is already held fast in a sticky mass of hatred, passion, and murder -- in a world where intense sweetness is accompanied by a deadly sting.

From Publishers Weekly
On a summer night in a housing development near Los Angeles, police sergeant Peter Decker finds a winsome two-year-old girl playing on a swing set--and wearing blood-soaked pajamas. Unclaimed, "Sally" is placed in a foster home while Decker and partner Marge Dunn try to learn her identity. Bee stings on her arms lead them days later to the scene of a bloody multiple murder at a honey farm. While piecing together a bizarre puzzle of betrayal and revenge which includes adultery, infertility and land development plans, Peter is also investigating rape and assault charges brought against an old army buddy from Vietnam. The pressures of the murder case and doubts about his friend's innocence compound Peter's anxiety as he waits for young Orthodox Jewish widow Rina Lazarus to decide if she will marry him--an older man who's only recently embraced his Jewish heritage. Kellerman weaves these threads into a believable, intricate mystery in which series hero Decker is revealed as even more complex, interesting and sympathetic than in earlier appearances ( Sacred and Profane ). Mystery Guild selection; Literary Guild alternate; author tour.

Review
"Stunning . . . unforgettable."
-- Cleveland Plain Dealer (Cleveland, OH Plain Dealer )
From the Publisher
Part of my responsiblities as mass market managing editor of Ballantine includes handling reprints. In addition to updating front and back matter in order to keep everything up to date, I make sure that any text changes that need to be made are indeed made. This could include anything from factual information that an author wants to change to simple misspellings (although we pride ourselves in having many books with zero typos). Well, recently I received a letter that had originally been sent from a reader to Faye Kellerman, who sent it on to us. The reader wrote about how much she loves Faye's books, and she was shocked to find a few typos in one of the books. I reviewed her list of "errors," and lo and behold, a couple of them absolutely had to be changed. Whenever a reader does something like this, I like to respond with a letter of my own, along with a copy of the book with the corrections made. But in this case there was only a return address; nowhere was there a name. I looked at the address again; it sounded awful familiar. I searched the remnants of my limited brain and suddenly realized that the letter had come from one of my best friends' mothers. And I could see Mrs. R's style all over it. I immediately called my friend and told him about it; we decided to do nothing until the next reprint comes out, with the corrections. Then I'll send a copy of the book, with a note from me, thanking Mrs. R for all her help. I guess the world gets a little smaller every day. . . .

Beekeeping information badly researched
By Lan the Answer Man
Although I'm a big fan of Faye Kellerman, I thought Milk and Honey, the third installment in the Decker/Lazarus series fell down in one area, and it made me suspect the quality of Kellerman's research in other areas.
I'm a hobbyist beekeeper, and even though I'm not an expert on the subject the information on beekeeping in Milk and Honey is way off target. Without giving anything away, a 2-year-old child is found wandering around alone in a residential development, and what appears at first to be a rash on her arms leads Decker and other detectives to two families of beekeepers near L.A.
At one point in the novel one of the characters, by banging on the hives, gets the honeybees from a number of different hives to fly out, join together and chase Pete Decker and his partner. The bees are described as flying out and coalescing in a big swarm that chase the detectives. This is ridiculous. Bees simply don't act that way. The only bees that might possibly act that way are Africanized bees, which were not in California in any numbers when this novel was written in 1990. Also, the bees are sometimes describing as "biting." Bees don't bite; the worker bees sting.
There are many other little things in the novel that show Kellerman didn't do much if any research on beekeeping. First, I've rarely heard a beekeeper refer to a "honey farm." For one thing, in California in particular much of the money in beekeeping is in renting hives for pollination for almond growers and for growers of other nut and fruit trees; selling honey is often just a sideline to the real money in pollination and in selling nucs, live bees and queens to other beekeepers. For another, the professional beekeepers in the book are described as always wearing veils and gloves. Even very experienced beekeepers often do wear veils, because bees can fly into the orifices in one's face -- eyes, nose, mouth and eyes -- and sometimes other protective gear, but many if not most pros don't use gloves because it makes it more difficult for the beekeeper to work with hives without accidentally killing bees if their hands are covered in thick gloves.
These are just a few of the bee facts in this novel that don't ring true to anyone who has spent time around bees or who has researched them.
I understand that is a mystery novel, not a book on beekeeping, but the lack of good research in this area makes me wonder about in what other areas the research may be weak.

Milk and Honey - Faye Killerman
By Ruth Metz
Milk and Honey is quite interesting and goes off in many different story lines, the affair with Decker and Rina, the religious end of the relationship, the police work that Decker is involved in of finding the baby and not being able to locate any family till quite a few pages into the book. Also, relationship between Decker and Abel and reliving their days fought in Viet Nam and the scars they both brought back coming home from the war. The confrontation towards the end of the book between the both of them is very intense and you get to see what actually happened and they feel that way they do about each other.
I had never read Faye Kellerman books, but will start looking into them if the carrier of p.o. gentlemen Decker I found the book very exciting and will certainly follow this author again.

Confusing
By Marijane Mcbride
I think the story all around was okay, but the book was very confusing to me. I understand the case and how they go about solving it, but things jumped around so much that I was often lost as to what was going on. For example, in one scene, Decker and his partner are at the foster home where the little girl Decler found was taken until they could find who she belonged to and her aunt is there with them to pick up the child. The foster mother Sophia brings the baby into the aunt and the scene is dramatic with the baby calling for her mama and the aunt not knowing what to tell her. The next sentence is one of the other detectives at the office in the middle of a conversation with Decker. This happened a lot throughout the book. Also, unless one is Jewish and/or understands Jewish religious terms, they will be lost on so much of it being added to the story. However, it was not only a murder mystery, but also a sweet love story between Decker and Rina. Basically, a fairly good story, but also confusing which made it hard to really get into for me.
