From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Set during a lurid South Carolina summer, this mystery opens as picture-perfect Emmie receives a frantic call from her best friend, Chelsea. Chel's father has been brutally assaulted in their home, and it appears that her brother, along with resident bad boy Deacon, is the culprit. While everyone in town is busy pointing fingers at Deacon, Emmie must decide for herself whether she should trust and defend the boy she's loved from afar or if she should do what everyone expects of a good girl and give him up to the authorities. This romantic whodunit might be best for early teen and reluctant readers with its swift pace, accessible plotlines, and somewhat predictable twists. In addition, reluctant readers will enjoy piecing the clues together to solve the mystery. For the sensitive reader, it is worth mentioning that there are references to death and drug addiction throughout. Richards does a beautiful job painting scenes of Southern life in a boating town and incorporating some diverse characters. However, she also makes some confusing leaps in the plot, leaving out critical details. For instance, in the first part of the novel, there is no mention of any character asking the beaten man to identify his assailant; rather, the townsfolk make their own assumptions and go on a witch hunt from there. The result is that the premise feels a bit flimsy and the characters' decisions are overly dramatic and premature. VERDICT Despite some flaws, this is a good choice for younger teens who want a bit of PG romance and a modern Nancy Drew-esque mystery.—Leighanne Law, Scriber Lake High School, WA

5 stars rounding up to 4 because I liked it more than a 3
By J. Arkin
3.5 stars rounding up to 4 because I liked it more than a 3.

Emerson does everything right… she’s an amazing friend, she’s volunteers and she never gets in trouble. But she’s had a crush on her best friends brother for years and he’s the poster child for trouble.

When Deacon shows up in her bedroom covered in blood and practically catatonic she doesn’t ask questions… she simply helps him, because that’s what she does. But she quickly finds out that everyone thinks Deacon assaulted his father and with his temper it’s entirely possible. When it comes down to it though she still has some reservations, she just can’t imagine it was him so she sets out to help Deacon in any way she can.

But if Deacon didn’t do it… who did, and why?

That is the basis of this story. Told from Emmie’s point of view, we only know what she knows, which provides a lot of mystery. I distinctly remember thinking I knew who did it, and as the story progressed I changed my mind and then changed my mind again, so Richards does a really amazing job of keeping the suspense throughout. I have to say my early suspicions were proven correct, but for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why so that was a total surprise and something I wasn’t really expecting.

I really enjoy the characters that Richards creates in her stories, and I feel the same about both Emmie and Deacon here. I loved that Richards didn’t let Emmie be swayed by her crush on a boy, simply believing everything he said because she liked him… instead she used her smarts to find out the truth. Deacon, who’s a year or two older than Emmie, is the notorious player who hasn’t really noticed her all these years. And I really love when there is a friendship to build a relationship off of which we definitely have here, so that was a bonus to their finding that spark within each other.

Though I think my issues with the story was that under the circumstances and where the story starts there was little time for as much romance as I would have liked to see in this story, I do kind of wish we had gotten more. I also felt like a lot of the build to why Deacon finally noticed her or why Emmie was interested in him wasn’t there and therefore I didn’t feel the connection between them as much as I would have liked.

My Secret To Tell is definitely going to appeal to fans of YA suspense and mystery with just a hint of romance. The story itself is fast paced and well plotted and full of intrigue… and it just might keep you guessing who the bad guy really is until the very end.

I’m definitely going to be reading anything Richards writes in the future and if you haven’t picked up any of her titles I urge you to do so… everything she writes is unique and interesting and you just can’t go wrong!

A solid YA mystery (with some romance)
By Caroline
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

My Secret to Tell is the story of Emmerson (Emmie) May. She’s seventeen, smart, kind, driven… and completely in love with her best friends brother. Ever since her older brother, Landon, dropped out of college and abandoned the family, Emmie has put the pressure of living up to her mothers hopes on herself. While she really dreams of becoming a marine biologist, or maybe a veterinarian, her mother expects her to live the life she didn’t get when she got pregnant too young – by a boy who did not fit the mold her own parents wanted for her. So, in order to help Emmie live her mothers dream of her becoming a lawyer, she takes a job with her best friend Chelsea’s father’s business, helping out in the office.

All is good and well in her world until the day Chelsea’s brother, Deacon, shows up in her bedroom covered in blood. Years earlier, Deacon found his mother dead, ever since, the sight of blood has left him virtually catatonic. Emmie and Chelsea have spent years taking care of him whenever blood is involved.

Emmie soon discovers Deacon is the prime suspect in an assault that has left Deacon and Chelsea’s father in the hospital. Emmie knows that though Deacon has a tough exterior, there’s no possible way he would ever do something like this. Her parents tell her to stay away, the sherrif tells her if she sees him she must call him immediately, Deacon is a wanted man. But Emmie is a helper, she’s a fixer, she can’t just abandon her friend.

I honestly wasn’t sure whether I’d like this story or not when I requested it from NetGalley. I don’t read a lot of mysteries, but this book makes me want to read more. The characters were phenomenal. Richards did a great job creating two very likable and flawed characters with Emmie and Deacon. While Deacon takes his demons and lashes out at the world, driving too fast and dating too many girls, Emmie goes the other route, and at her brother leaving, becomes borderline OCD. Despite their flaws—or perhaps because of them— both are extremely charismatic and relatable characters.

The whole time I was rooting for Emmie and Deacon to end up together. The sexual tension was there, slowly building the entire story. The two made a great team trying to solve the mystery of Deacon’s dad’s assault.

Just when I thought I’d figured out the mystery, Richards threw a curve ball and I was second guessing everything. In the end, I was very satisfied with the conclusion of the story. Skeletons were revealed, characters grew, and I was left feeling satisfied with the story. This won’t be the only Natalie D. Richards book I will read, I think she has a new fan.

The only negative, which forces me to deduct half a star, is the formatting of this book. I’m really hoping that because I read an advanced copy, the formatting will be resolved prior to release day, but just in case it’s not, I would not feel right failing to mention it here.

Ultimately, this is a must read in my book. A very satisfying mystery, with excellent character development and enough romance thrown in for good measure.

A clever young adult whodunit
By K. Branfield
My Secret to Tell by Natalie D. Richards is a very intriguing young adult mystery. With just a hint of romance, this suspense-laden novel is sure to be a hit with teen readers.

Emerson “Emmie” May is a good girl who does everything right but even she is feeling the strain of her parents’ expectations for her future. Ever since her older brother Landon crashed and burned during his first year of college, all of her parents’ dreams are resting on her shoulders. However, even her fear of disappointing them cannot withstand her loyalty to the Westfield family and despite their pleas to stay away from them after their father is brutally attacked, Emmie cannot abandon her friend Chelsea and her brother (and Emmie’s secret crush), Deacon.

Emmie and Chelsea have been best friends for years and the two share everything. So when Chelsea’s father is assaulted in their home, Emmie is the first person she calls. Emmie is shocked to learn that Deacon is the prime suspect in the attack due to their tempestuous relationship. But when she returns home to find him waiting in her bathroom covered in blood, Emmie does what she does best: she cleans him up and offers her support. However, even she begins to doubt his innocence in the days after the attack once Deacon goes into hiding. Although Emmie remains unsure of his guilt, one thing is absolutely certain: both Chelsea and Deacon are keeping secrets from her. But do these secrets have anything to do with the attack on their father?

Emmie and Deacon are well-developed, multi-faceted characters. Emmie is caught between her loyalty to her friends and her need to please her parents (which is something teens will definitely relate to). The issues she is dealing with are pretty straight forward but it is only a matter of time before she has to decide whether to follow her heart regardless of her parents’ expectations.

On the surface, Deacon certainly seems troubled but he is also a caring and compassionate young man. He has had a few scrapes here and there but there is no denying his relationship with his father is deeply troubled. Although the police have good reason to suspect he has something to do with his father’s assault, it soon becomes obvious the police have focused exclusively on him. Deacon is not just avoiding the police; he is conducting an investigation of his own. He uncovers some puzzling clues, but, to his frustration, this new information does little to help him figure out the identity of his father’s attacker.

My Secret to Tell is a clever whodunit with a fabulous cast of characters and an alluring romance that will appeal to teens. The mystery element is interesting and full of unexpected twists and turns. The motive for the crime remains elusive and Natalie B. Richards skillfully utilizes numerous red herrings to keep readers guessing the perpetrator’s identity right up until the novel’s rather dramatic and pulse pounding conclusion.
