Frontiersman in anthropology and linguistics

Sapir's principal field of study was language. This book contains nine essays from the SELECTED WRITINGS OF EDWARD SAPIR IN LANGUAGE, CULTURE AND PERSONALITY. Edward Sapir was born in Lauenberg, Germany in 1884. His early education was is Richmond, Virginia and in New York City. He graduated from Columbia University in 1904 and with Franz Boas's encouragement he took an M.A. in Germany and a Ph.D. in anthropology. Much of his work concerned American Indian languages and culture.
Every group of human beings has speech and a well-ordered language. Language is a perfect means of expression. Language is primarily a system of phonetic symbols. Phonetic language takes precedence over other kinds of communicative symbolism. All languages are also phonemic. There are a fixed number of phonetic stations. Languages differ widely in their phonemic structure. The fundamental theory of sound symbolism remains the same everywhere.
All grammars have the same degree of fixity. Language is felt to be a perfect symbolic system. Once the form of a language is established it can project potential meanings onto experience. Forms predetermine certain modes of observation. Language interpenetrates actual experience. Language is learned early and piecemeal. It is rarely a purely referential organization.
Language is primarily a vocal actualization of the tendancies to see realities symbolically. Language is a great socializer. There is no correspondence between the form of a language and the form of a culture. The cultural significance of a language form is much more submerged.
Linguistics began it scientific career with the reconstruction of the Indo-European languages. The value of linguistics to cultural studies and anthropology has been recognized. Language is a guide to social reality. Language may be thought of as a symbolic guide to culture. Psychologists concern themselves with linguistic data. A drawback in applying language to unrelated areas is that language to a very great extent is self-contained. Where interest in language has transcended narrow limits, both historical problems and human behavior need to be studied.
Language is primarily a social or cultural product, not a biological product. The culture of the group and the individual are interdependent. The self seeks mastery. What constitutes spiritual serenity must be answered afresh for every culture. Religion does not presuppose a definite belief in God. Cultural anthropology may be useful to psychiatry.
This scholarly work, influential to generations of students of human behavior, contains numerous ideas of great interest to the informed general reader. The writing and the theories are not heavy fare. Enjoyment of the work is not limited to those who have training or experience in sociology or anthropology or linguistics. Apparently the book constitutes a fair representation of the man and the scope of his scholarlarship.

An Extremely Helpful, Informative Book

This book covers everything you need to repair, maintain or upgrade a personal computer. The text covers legacy and more recent hardware. It's informative and is enhanced with plenty of photos and charts to make computer repair/upgrading easier for both veteran and novice. I built my computer using this book. The appendices include trouble-shooting flow charts, lists of companies selling what you need and lists of valuable software utilities available, amoung other items. It even covers all you need to know about peripherals. In the four months since I've purchased it, it's proven to be an invailuable reference.

It worked for me!

This book as is good as it's title: I did manage to fix my own (Pentium II) PC by reading it! It gave me the knowledge to find the problem (a bad motherboard) and the courage to replace it. Operations that at first glance looked intimidating, were made relatively simple by the book's clear discussions, explanations and photos. It's range covers the inner workings of old PC's up through the Pentium II (as well as a little bit of info on the Pentium III.) Not a perfect book, though: the photo printing could be better; and the section on power supplies isn't complete or accurate, particularly when it comes to ATX-type supplies--oddly, the type found in most Pentium machines, for which the book is otherwise a good repair guide. (The power supply is a vital component in a PC, and is oftentimes the first gizmo to go bad.) I had to go outside the book to find that critical info. But criticism aside, I wouldn't have been able to repair my computer without this book, period, so I would recommend it. Perhaps a newer edition will correct the minor shortcomings.

Written with non-technical PC users in mind, Fix Your Own PC is a valuable guide to diagnosing, fixing, and understanding your PC. That is hardly surprising, given that the book is into its sixth edition with over 200,000 copies in print.

In the author's opinion, repairing a PC is actually a job that exercises the muscles between your ears. True to his words, he makes this job appear less physically daunting than fixing, say, a car.

With nearly 250 photos, illustrations and troubleshooting flowcharts, Fix Your Own PC introduces you to the alphabet soup of the PC world in layman terms. The book comes with easily identified icons highlighting useful tips and important notes about the subject, as well as handy cross-references that point to more details elsewhere.

If you want to know how to change a hard drive, fix balky memory, or figure out why your monitor has gone black, this book will give you the sense of pride that comes with accomplishing work on your own. Plus, it might save you time and money!

Perhaps the only drawback is the format of the book, which can be difficult to browse on a cluttered tabletop.

It's getting me by

The words - basic and easy to read DO NOT come to mind when I review this text - as some others have stated. This class is very difficult. There are a lot of terms to remember. I am only half way through the course and I do not feel like I am learning anything from this text. That being said, my course is 7 weeks. It is a lot harder to get out of the material what you want to when you need to speed through it to finish your final project.

I rented this book for an Introductory Research class. While it's a fairly dry read, it will teach you everything you need to know about research methods, design types, the scientific method, ethics, and how to properly conduct an experiment.

I really like the writing style

For a textbook, there is a bit of humor. Each chapter stands on its own so important information is defined again in other chapters as it relates to the new chapter. Its a great reference if you need to write a research paper. Also, it has examples of APA pages/sections along with the information that should be included in each section.

Finally, a book that actually worked for me, and continues to do so. This is not just another prosperity consciousness book! Whenever I worked with those books, I found myself more in scarcity than prosperity. They seemed to have the opposite effect. So if you were like me.... This book will be such a god send!!!!

Recently, I have had to become even more selective about what books to keep after releasing 80% of the books that I currently own. I pay for all of the books that I review out of my own pocket and I intend wisely keep only the books that I would put into actual application. During this process I intuitively felt drawn to "Riches For You" by Gary M. Douglas and Dr. Dain Heer due to my intent to accomplish my top five goals of raising my wealth vibration and increasing my psychic faculties. In order to delve straight to the review, I must only disclose that I am utilizing "Riches For You" for the wealth vibration and the work of Lynn Robinson for my intuition goals. One of the areas that "Riches For You" by Gary M. Douglas & Dr. Dain Heer touches on is the relationship of the ability to receive in correlation to the outcome of a man or woman's financial output. Their chapter on "evidentiary contrivances" is also helpful. I really wish that I would have known about their work just four years ago, but I'm glad to now be exposed to this information. Having read "Prophecy Key to the Future" many times, and watching the events of recent history unfold, I am amazed at how those events have followed closely to prophecy as outlined in Duane S. Crowther's book. Back in 1962, having used scriptures of prophetic substance, Mr. Crowther clearly spelled out what to expect and look for as signs of Jesus Christ's Second Coming at the beginning years of the new millennia. God's prophets give us a clear picture of the future of those of mankind that will not follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. Wo be to those, and Joy be to those who follow. Read this book with an open heart and you will not have to fear the many coming calamities still to be realized.
Excellent, must-read book for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), as they have the additional knowledge of the "Book of Mormon"'s prophetic scriptures, in addition to the King Jame's Version of the Holy Bible. I, as an LDS member, am looking forward to the future with no fear, as I am now able to see God's hand in orchestrating future events, in preparation for His Son's Second Coming!

This is an excellent book for reading as well as for reference. This is the third purchase of this book for me, having given this book to help people understand the things occurring around us. Crowther's interpretation and explanation of prophecies concerning these latter days are amazingly accurate and timeless and presented in a way to forwarn but not to frighten. A must for every LDS desiring to understand the prophecies of the last days.

This is the fourth of E. Zeidler's amazing 5 volume set (I,IIa,IIb,III,IV) on nonlinear functional analysis and it's applications. I am a real fan of these books and have used this particular volume to understand various fine points of variational theory. For example, I very much liked chapter 48 on generalized Lagrange multipliers (Dubovickii-Miljutin theory).
