Back in the early 1970s, "Janson"--as History of Art is universally known--was a hefty but manageable 616 pages, illustrated mostly with black-and-white photographs. It also famously contained not a single work by a female artist and devoted a scant eight pages to non-Western art. Five editions and three decades later, the art history student's Stone Age-to-20th-century Bible has swelled into a massive, slipcased, 1,000-page tome studded with 865 color reproductions and subheadings that corral individual artists whose achievements used to flow together like some mighty art historical river.

Women artists (from 17th-century painter Artemisia Gentileschi to contemporary photographer Cindy Sherman) now make the cut, and the focus is purely Western, extended to include 20th-century photography and postmodernism (with a scant two pages on postmodern theory). The timeline charting landmarks in art alongside key events in history, science, and the arts has been handsomely redesigned. Each historical period now has its own world map and selection of excerpts from primary sources (including unusual ones, like a fellow monk's account of painter Hugo van der Goes's mental troubles).

With each edition, portions of the text have been altered to reflect shifting scholarly interpretations. (As the late H.W. Janson wryly noted in the original, 1962 preface, "There are no 'plain facts' in the history of art.") H.W.'s son Anthony writes in his preface to the sixth edition that changes have been made to sections on ancient art; French romantic, realist, and impressionist painting; and the history of Western architecture. Happily unchanged--no dumbing-down here--is the clarity and intelligence of the writing. All in all, History of Art remains an invaluable reference for anyone who studies or writes about the subject. But even if no further bloat is contemplated, the time has come to rename the worthy Janson History of Western Art, and to divide it into two volumes, if only to protect the health and backpacks of art historians-to-be. --Cathy Curtis

Horst W. Janson died in 1982, not long after the second edition of his best-selling History of Art was published. His son Anthony (art history, Univ. of North Carolina, Wilmington) inherited the franchise and has contributed to four subsequent updates, this one appearing four years after the last revision. Familiar to art history students throughout the world, this massive survey of 30,000 years of Western art is generally regarded as the fundamental text for teaching the subject to undergraduates. It is a deserving reputation, for in addition to the ecumenical enthusiasm and economy of description infusing the Jansons' writing, the work features time lines densely packed with data, four sections of over 100 primary sources, well-chosen illustrations, and an updated bibliography including web references. Its graphic design is rich with imagery and progresses without any affectations. New to this edition are rewritten sections covering architecture, ancient art, and French painting, as well as a discography of related recordings. The Jansons' comprehensive history of Western art is practically an institution. First published in 1962, it has grown and changed over the decades in response to the creation of new artworks as well as to new archaeological finds, long overlooked details such as Michelangelo's tortured self-portrait in The Last Judgment, and fresh interpretations and ongoing controversies, the lifeblood of art history, which is always a work in progress. Janson senior died in 1982, but his son has carried on, now presenting an energetically renovated and expanded edition. Distinguished by the clarity and liveliness of its prose and the sharpness and rich color of its reproductions, this volume offers fluent analysis of both the formal aspects of the art it highlights and the historical context within which it was created. And the Jansons don't skimp on coverage of twentieth-century art and architecture, as other survey writers do. Instead they document its frenetic diversity and risk-taking with a profound sense of what connects the work of Susan Rothenberg, for instance, with the magical cave paintings of Lascaux. Best art history reference for most people..

This is a wonderful book and, in my humble opinion, a better book for most users than the big textbook edition "History of Art". The only complaint I have about this edition is its name; I feel it should be titled "History of Art: Concise Edition" as "History of Art for Young People" makes it sound too much like a children's book. While certainly suitable for an intelligent child, it is a superb art overview and reference for all people.
If you desire a general art reference you won't go wrong with this gem and you'll not find anything better. I have the 3rd edition also and it is excellent but this 6th one is greatly expanded (e.g., lots more photos and color) while retaining the user-friendly nature of the earlier editions. The text is clear and interesting, not written in the dry, boring style of a textbook. The printing and reproductions are top-quality. This art book is truly itself a masterpiece!

Originally got this book for a class my wife was taking. she dropped out of the class but we kept the book because it is so wonderful. Lots of great pictures and extensive information. Nicely bound and the slipcase is a bonus. A favorite on our coffee table and a great addition to our collection. Proved very valuable later when I took an art history class. We used a different book but I found myself going back to this one for its great pictures and presentation of the art.

Disappointing

I guess I was one of the minority of people who were just disappointed by this book.

I adored the Boss. I absolutely adored the Girlfriend. The Bride was a bit of a disappointment, but the Ex was a lot, lot more disappointing.

I think just too many things were thrown at the reader, and just received superficial treatment. In one book, we had Neil's mother dying, Neil's alcoholism, Emma's new baby, Neil's ex, a relationship with Valerie, a foursome, Sophie's mother coming to stay, Sophie's eating issues and (insert eye-roll) Sophie's new-found bisexuality. Which meant that every one of these topics, which was worthy of actual exploration, really only received a paragraph or two before the author moved on to the next big thing.

As much as I love Neil and Sophie, I want to remember them with the Boss and the Girlfriend. I think I'm done with this series.

The books in this series keep getting better

Sometimes a series will start to peter out and I'll wish the author would just let the characters go off into the sunset and live happily ever after. This is NOT the case with Abigail Barnette's sexy series. The characters remain compelling and the storyline keeps me interested. I want more. After I finished this one, I went back and re-read portions of The Boss just to remember certain details. This series is very well written and HOT. I will continue to buy any installments the author publishes.

I can name a couple of series where I was once obsessed and feel the author is just churning them out now for money. Last week, I read the 4th book in the Crossfire series (Captivated By You) and just thought it was "bleh". Diana Gabaldon's last two books in the Outlander series have just sucked, in my opinion. I know some readers will give rave reviews to just about anything, but I'm careful about encouraging readers with limited time and resources to take the plunge and invest in a book that I can't wholeheartedly recommend. This 4th book in the series is truly terrific.

Wonderful critical introduction to Clark Ashton Smith

This is a welcome, expanded edition of Behrends' work for Starmont, to which the Behrends added further examples of his scholarship. Smith's life, verse, prose poetry, the story cycles and individual prose fictions are treated in a number of chapters that are brief in duration, but packed with Behrends' insights into this man's work.

The reprinted essay, "The Song of the Necromancer: 'Loss' in Clark Ashton Smith's Fiction" is particularly important in focusing attention away from the common misconceptions that Smith's work delights above all else in depictions of torture, depravity, and decay, a view reinforced by L. Sprague De Camp's facile and oft-quoted remark that "Nobody since Poe has so loved a well-rotted corpse". Smith may well be the Master of Magnificent Dooms, but the lingering impression most strongly felt after the majority of his poems, prose poems, and stories is the melancholy consideration of all that these characters, the world, and even we ourselves have lost.

My only complaint about this book lies with Wildside's decision to reprint Behrends' Primary and Secondary Bibliographies exactly as they appeared in the 1990 edition, thus ignoring scholarship devoted to Smith from the last 25 years. This does not detract from the value of Behrends' work, which remains clearly written, well-argued, deeply felt.

Nonetheless, these bibliographies, as they stand, are no longer as useful to the reader of Smith as they were when first compiled, and are a disservice to the many men and women who have devoted their time and energy to Smith studies since Behrends published this study, especially when those studies have resulted in such seminal volumes as the SELECTED LETTERS (Arkham House, 2003), the collected fiction published by Night Shade Press (5 volumes between 2007-2010, and a miscellany in 2011), as well as several volumes from Hippocampus Press, including the collected correspondence of Smith with George Sterling (2005), the three-volume collected poems and translations (2007-2008), and the volume of essays and appreciations on Smith edited by Scott Connors (2006). Beyond this is a variety of worthy material ranging from newly uncovered stories, prose poems, and verse by Smith, variant texts of familiar work by Smith, essays in print and electronic media, journals, and collections.

Clark Ashton Smith has long been my favorite of the Weird Tales triumvirate. So it’s refreshing to see him finally emerge from out of Lovecraft and Howard’s shadow with so much of his work being reissued and thoughtfully discussed. There’s a lot to like in Behrends’ book. His Critical Study hits everything it should: Smith’s life, his poetry, the different story cycles, his stand-alone works, and his reoccurring themes. It’s a very thoughtful and well-researched nonfiction work. Without a doubt, Behrends knows his Smith

However, I had some issues with it. First, the Amazon synopsis describes it as “a substantial examination of his life and work”. However, the opening chapter on Smith’s life is a mere 25 pages of a 220 page book, less actually if you only look at the biographical facts contained in those 25 pages. The supplementary essays would have been better served worked into the book itself rather than tacked on to the end where they seem more an afterthought to raise page count. Furthermore, the “virgin” essay was pointless and unnecessary without a greater discussion of Smith’s love life for appropriate context. And this book certainly was not the place to include a story of Smith’s that Behrends completed.

But the worst offense, I think, is for a second edition of a nonfiction book released by an actual publisher to contain a single typo. And this book has several, which absolutely undercut any claim of critical authority for me.

This is a fascinating if overlong look at the megasuccess of Fleetwood Mac in the mid-1970s, after the former British blues band recorded the laid-back rock songs of guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks that made the album Rumours one of the most popular of its era. While working at the band's recording studio, Harris, currently a music business costume designer, became Buckingham's girlfriend and constant companion from 1976 through 1984, and she gives a detailed look—more so than drummer and original member Mick Fleetwood's biography—at this already well-chronicled story of how the success of Rumours provided the income for extravagant cocaine-fueled excesses before, during and after performances. Harris too often uses clichés, such as her view of the band's beautiful insanity. But she does candidly recount Buckingham's rage and his repeated physical assaults on her. Along the way, she offers great descriptions of the band's recording sessions, especially her account of Buckingham's desire to create something new, something completely different for Tusk, the more experimental (and less profitable) follow-up to Rumours. Harris, then Buckingham's girlfriend, chronicles the behind-the-scenes drugs-and-sex-and-rock-and-roll aspects of the band's late-1970s climb to mega mainstream success with the albums Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, and the relatively underperforming Tusk. During this time, group bassist John McVie and his wife, Christine, the band's most successful songwriter, divorced; Buckingham and Nicks ended their romantic relationship; and internal love affairs and myriad rumors threatened band cohesiveness. Enter Harris, who proved more a symptom than a cause of the turmoil. Great Book!

I generally read history books but sometimes I read books about music or musicians. I had read Ken Caillet's book "Making Rumours" this past spring which was another good read but his book ended when the recording of Rumours did and it left me wanting more. So when I went looking for a book to read this time this book by Carol Ann Harris grabbed my attention because it picked up where Ken's left off just as Rumours was about to be released. This was a riveting book! Very well written. A page turner as they say. Every time I put it down I couldn't wait to get back to it. It comes off as sincere and honest. I would love to read a book by Lindsay someday to hear another point of view as well. Get it. Read it. You won't regret it...
BTW- I'm 54 years old. Grew up with Rumours. Saw them on July 28th, 1978 at Rich Stadium (Buffalo NY) Found out in this book it was the second leg of the Rumours tour. They were amazing that night! 75,000 people. Great weather. Foreigner, Bob Welch and Pablo Cruise opened up for them. Ahh what a great memory...

Never break the chain...

I'm a huge fan of Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. I had read "Making Rumours" earlier this year, and found it interesting. Ken Caillet, who wrote that book, mentioned this book and stories that Carol Ann Harris had about Lindsay Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac. At first I thought I was reading an old Tiger Beat magazine (yes, I am that old) the way that Carol Ann Harris started out the first few chapters. While she may not have been star struck, she was really into describing how cute Lindsay was. After that, the story grew more interesting as she told tales of band concerts, traveling and parties. Carol Ann was a saint (just ask her) other than loving cocaine as much as the rest of the group and their small circle of friends. She does shed some light on some things I'd never known or heard before. Everything is told from her perspective, so it's hard to say what really happened all the time as opposed to her perception of what happened. I'd like to think she's a decent person who got caught up in a lot of the madness that was rock'n'roll in the 70s. I'd also like to think Fleetwood Mac has grown beyond who they were at that time, however, it's not their job to be role models, only entertainers.
This is an easy read, a little slow at first, but once I got into the meat of things, it was hard to put down.

I go back and forth on whether I like this book or not. I read it in a day or two, it did hold my attention. But I just can't help thinking that certain things don't ring true. In my opinion, Carol pens herself in a certain light of innocence, devotion, and confusion at Lindsey's alleged outbursts. For people doing as many drugs as Carol says they were, the fights seem one sided. She comes off as the most rational and in control person doing cocaine I've ever heard of. If I had to guess I would imagine that the truth is somewhere in the middle and neither one of them can recollect it accurately because of all the drugs and time gone by.
I've seen some comments about Carol being jealous and catty about Stevie. I didn't get that at all. Stevie probably was kind of out there at the time, and she does seem to have a penchant for being dramatic. I laughed out loud at the part where Stevie compared Lindsey's grand mal seizure with her poodle getting sick from being overheated. I actually think the parts about Stevie seemed spot on. Of course Stevie wouldn't be raring to go be BFFs with Lindsey's new girlfriend. Those two still talk about each other and their relationship even now, imagine how raw it was back in the 70's when Lindsey's new girlfriend was there all the time and they were constantly singing songs about their breakup in rehearsals and at every show.
I would say this book is interesting, but it seems biased, which is what you should expect in my opinion when someone writes their own memoir.

Good scope; figures and index fall short

For a cross-disciplinary mathematical biologist who is to be an end-user of cardiac models, this book gave a quick introduction to electrocardiograms, electromechanics, and pertinent computing algorithms. It provides worked examples which should be useful in conjunction with a dedicated course book e.g. on partial differential equations. Regrettably, many terms and abbreviations used in the text are absent in the index, detracting from the book's value as a quick reference. The illustrations could be much better, considering the multidimensional, multivariate nature of the system. Instead, they suffer from unlabeled axes, nonuniform color maps in multi-panel figures, or wasteful use of color plates where different linestyles would suffice. All in all, not a feast for the eye but a reasonably concise, fairly well-structured primer on a specific sub-area of a huge research field.

Great Book for the people in computational cardiology. I used this book to make the necessary code to make the programming to simulate ECG's. Although it uses complex mathematics an engineer can follow the procedure without any problem.

Margaret Wheatley was cofounder and president of The Berkana Institute; Deborah Frieze succeeded her. Berkana partners with people developing healthy and resilient communities worldwide, many of whom are described in this book. Margaret is the author of five other books, including Leadership and the New Science and Perseverance.

About the Author

Margaret J. Wheatley is President Emerita and founder of The Berkana Institute, Meg has been working with people for many years to develop new practices and ideas for organizing people and communities. She is an internationally acclaimed speaker and author of several bestselling titles: Leadership and the New Science, A Simpler Way, Turning to One Another, and most recently, Finding Our Way.

Deborah Frieze is an author, entrepreneur and social activist. As former co-president of The Berkana Institute and co-founder of the Berkana Exchange, Deborah joined Berkana in 2002 to help bring its vision into the world and grow the Institute. She serves as a board member and is leading several initiatives, including Feeding Ourselves Sustainably, Swaraj University and multiple Sharing Our Learning projects. Deborah has an MBA from the Harvard Business School.

Challenged by Hope

I have devoted most of my life to the quest for justice, the path has been beset by victory and loss, hope and frustration. I often find myself contending with a deep awareness that too many of us - including the radicals and do-gooders that I count among my friends - including my own self! All of us seem to be stuck in a paradigm that has reached a dead end. And yet it is all we know. And so we give our hearts and our passion, our energy and life force to a process that often seems doomed.

I have had the privilege of participating in some of the learning journeys beautifully described in this Frieze and Wheatley book. I can honestly tell you that they bring us as close as we can get to the experience without actually being there. What is beautiful about the book is that it brings the reader to that place of hope and upheaval that one experiences on a learning journey. We get to witness phenomenally hopeful responses to injustice and despair. Bold, autonomous, real walk outs from a system that is broken.

The reader is filled with a sense of deep human solidarity, a sense of pride in what these people can accomplish, a sense of hope in our shared capacity to walk out and walk on to something better, something new and something that is fundamentally good. But this does not happen without being beset by the nagging questions of scale, the questions of where is policy change? Where is the state? Isn't all of this just quaint - cute, beautiful but exceptional - irreplicable. We have to come up against the core assumptions of the dominant approach. And if you are a do-gooder, you have to come up against the core assumptions of your own approach.

It is not an easy process, and the conclusion is not forgone. But if you think that something is not working, not even with your own approach to change and social transformation, if you think that our humanity is in need of something else, then these walk outs are onto something, and they seem to be walking on to a very powerful place.

Fascinating but unrealistic

A pretty good read that is somewhat akin to the concepts in "Cultivating Communities of Practice" (http://www.amazon.com/Cultivating-Communities-Practice-Etienne-Wenger/dp/1578513308), putting them into narrative form. The authors write about their journeys to communities around the world - in places like Zimbabwe, India, and Mexico - and their experience with communities that are breaking the mold and finding their own creative, group-based solutions to problems. These people have "walked out" of the systems that aren't working and have "walked on" to help create their own future and solutions (thus the name of the book, "Walk Out, Walk On," a phrase that is actually used very sparsely in the book itself). The book contains actual pictures of the places/people talked about the authors try to paint a vivid picture of the communities they encounter. The point of the book is that these kinds of community-based, creative solutions come about organically and are not imposed or transplanted. The authors spend a good portion of the book criticizing the West for being a know-it-all and importing solutions into other countries and communities that have ended up causing more harm "e.g., the Green Revolution." Their point is argued very convincingly, but they use a pretty condescending tone (as other reviewers have noted) and don't seem to recognize that the communities about which they write represent the exception, not the rule. As many books tend to do, the authors write about fascinating exceptions and then create a whole new, over-arching mental framework for the rest of life from these exceptions. In this case, the authors witness these fascinating, community-based solutions in different spots of the world, and then conclude that the answer to poverty and other problems is the impoverished community itself coming up with its own solution. They seem to argue that the worst thing we can do is try to come in and help and impose our own solutions, but they forget that the vast majority of poor communities have NOT come up with their own solutions nor do they seem motivated or able to do so. Nevertheless, the authors make some very powerful observations about the nature of leadership and community, and the stories they tell are definitely interesting. But I found it more frustrating than inspiring to read, because I kept thinking, "I don't know how to make that work in my context."

this book contains the seeds of the future

Sitting around fretting about the future of the human race is a favorite modern activity. Too many people, not enough food, climate change, not enough of this, too much of that. Most of the solutions being offered by development bankers, politicians, economists, and scientists merely shift problems from one place to another, postpone the day of reckoning, and/or create fragile interdependences that are certain to end badly, especially for the poor.

High-tech "silver bullets", like miraculous new sources of energy, won't solve the problems. Even if we do manage to create such new technologies, they are all too likely to perpetuate the status quo wherein the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and indigenous people lose their land.

Deborah Frieze and Margaret Wheatley have boldly created a window into something different.

Read this book to hear inspiring stories about people who step forward, people who are personally invested in the problems being solved and who work together; and about communities that exchange ideas with other communities as peers, rather than having short-sighted non-solutions handed down to them from a distance.

Using these stories as a starting point, Walk Out Walk On captures insights about change better than anything else I've read. It is like going on your own learning journey, with these two very wise guides.

I hope that by reading this book, others will be inspired, and the gears of change will start turning.
